Understanding Key Pickleball Rules: Insights from Expert Preston Engel
Clarifying Common Misconceptions in Pickleball
Preston Engel, a professional pickleball player and coach, has recently addressed several frequently misunderstood rules in the sport, emphasizing five critical regulations that players often misinterpret. In a discussion on his Instagram channel, Engel focused on the kitchen rule, which is a significant topic in pickleball. He clarified that this rule pertains solely to volleys, stating, “If I am standing inside the kitchen, I am not allowed to hit a volley out of the air.” However, he noted that players are permitted to enter the non-volley zone if the ball has already bounced there, adding, “If I know the ball is going to bounce in the kitchen, I can step in and hit it after the bounce.”
Engel also elaborated on the serving position, explaining that players must keep both feet behind the baseline and within the imaginary extensions of the centerline and sideline during a serve. He warned, “If either foot is outside the sideline when hitting a serve, that is a fault.” Furthermore, he pointed out that a ball does not need to travel directly over the net to be deemed a valid shot. Players can hit the ball around the net post if the angle permits, as long as it lands within the court's boundaries.
Another common myth addressed by Engel is regarding spin serves, which are indeed legal in pickleball. Players can utilize topspin, slice, or sidespin, provided they adhere to specific guidelines: contact must occur below the waist, the paddle head cannot be above the wrist at the moment of contact, and the swing should follow a low-to-high trajectory.
Lastly, Engel clarified that double hits can sometimes be permissible. He stated, “If the ball hits your paddle twice in one continuous swing, that is still a legal shot,” explaining that it only becomes a fault when there are distinctly two separate swings. As pickleball's popularity continues to rise worldwide, grasping these rules can assist players in avoiding unnecessary faults and enhancing their gameplay.
