Anna Muzychuk Claims Victory at Norway Chess

Stavanger, Norway - On June 7, Ukrainian chess Grandmaster Anna Muzychuk celebrated her victory at the Norway Chess tournament, where she reflected on her win and her early encounters with Indian chess star Koneru Humpy.

Muzychuk achieved her first Norway Chess title by drawing both in classical and armageddon formats against Grandmaster Vaishali Rameshbabu, accumulating a total of 16.5 points. Lei Tingjie secured the second position with 16 points, while Humpy came in third with 15 points. Vaishali finished fifth with 11 points.

In an interview, Muzychuk expressed her joy, stating, “I am very happy. This tournament and this win mean a lot, and I think it is a great success.”

Discussing India's rise in the chess world, she noted the influx of talented new players while acknowledging the continued presence of established players like Humpy. “India is producing many new and skilled players from the younger generation, but also from the older, like Koneru Humpy. I played my first game against her when I was seven, and she was ten, which was 28 years ago. India is excelling in both women's and men's competitions, and I believe we will see even more players emerging. Competing against them will always be a challenge,” she concluded.

Despite finishing third, Humpy did not manage to defeat Grandmaster Ju Wenjun in the classical game but won in the armageddon format, as reported by Chess.com. However, this was insufficient for her to claim the title.
