UFC Champion Merab Dvalishvili Talks MMA Growth in India Ahead of Title Defense
Merab Dvalishvili's Connection with Indian Fans
Guwahati, June 6: Merab Dvalishvili, the reigning UFC Bantamweight champion, affectionately known as 'The Machine', has garnered a significant fan base in India. The Georgian athlete, who visited the country last year, was impressed by the rising interest in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) among Indian audiences.
As he prepares for his highly anticipated title defense against Sean O'Malley on June 8, Merab shared insights about his training and his bond with Indian supporters.
Recognizing the sport's increasing popularity in India, especially in the North Eastern states, Merab encouraged aspiring fighters to leverage the internet and social media to connect with their idols and refine their skills.
“I was taken aback! I had no idea MMA and UFC had such a following in India. It’s incredible. MMA is expanding globally, and India holds immense potential. It’s a vast nation with a rich wrestling heritage,” Merab reflected on his visit to India in 2024.
Looking ahead, Merab expressed optimism that more Indian fighters will join the UFC. Despite acknowledging some infrastructural challenges, he remains hopeful about Indian athletes making a significant impact internationally.
“My advice is to keep training and always seek improvement. Nowadays, with the internet and YouTube, you can follow fighters, learn from them, and seek advice. Compete whenever possible — in wrestling, jiu-jitsu, or any discipline,” he advised.
“Train with better partners if you can. Even without access to a large gym, consistent daily training and dedication will yield results.”
Merab also expressed excitement about the prospect of competing in India someday. To date, only a few Indian fighters, including Anshul Jubli and Puja Tomar, have made their mark in the UFC.
“That would be fantastic! I love the idea. Why not? I would be thrilled to fight in India,” he stated.
The Georgian fighter has developed a close relationship with his Indian fans. “I appreciate all the support from Indian fans — they are amazing. I felt a lot of encouragement during my visit, and I continue to feel it. I receive numerous messages and comments from Indian fans on Instagram — it’s a wonderful feeling,” he shared.
“I even have Indian friends in the US who were excited about my trip to India. Everyone was talking about it, which made me happy.”
A fan of Paris Saint-Germain, thanks to his Georgian friend Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who plays for the club, Merab is approaching his upcoming fight against O'Malley with a focused mindset.
“Although I’ve defeated him before, this is a different fight. Sean has had time to reflect, correct his mistakes, and improve. I know he’s a threat — he hits hard, is quick, and has excellent reach and footwork,” he noted.
“So I reminded myself, ‘You need to keep pace with him’. This is a new challenge, a fresh fight. I must ensure everything goes smoothly.”
Reflecting on his experiences in India, Merab expressed his love for Indian cuisine and enjoyed exploring Mumbai. He fondly remembered a beach wrestling session with local fighters, calling it one of the highlights of his visit.
