Tributes Pour In for Vece Paes, Indian Hockey Legend and Sports Advocate
A Legacy Remembered
Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], August 14: The Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association (KSLTA) expressed profound sorrow over the passing of Vece Paes, a celebrated midfielder from India's illustrious hockey history. He was a vital member of the team that secured a bronze medal at the 1972 Munich Olympics, as noted in a statement from KSLTA.
Dr. Paes, who was 80 years old, was a cornerstone of Indian sports, leaving behind a remarkable legacy that inspired numerous athletes and sports enthusiasts alike.
“On behalf of KSLTA, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Leander, his mother Jennifer, and the entire family following Dr. Paes's passing. This is indeed a somber day for the sports community, as he was a passionate advocate for fostering a robust sporting culture in our nation. His pioneering work in sports science has made a lasting impact on the Indian sports landscape,” stated Sunil Yajaman, Joint Secretary of KSLTA.
“Dr. Vece Paes was not only a cherished friend but also a mentor from whom I gained invaluable insights. I recall numerous occasions where I absorbed his wisdom on nurturing and developing elite athletes. He was truly one of the most remarkable individuals I have encountered. On behalf of the KSLTA Executive Committee, I wish his family the strength to cope with this irreplaceable loss. This is a personal loss for me and a significant loss for the Indian sports community,” Yajaman added.
Born in Goa in April 1945, Dr. Paes excelled in both athletics and academics. In addition to his sports accolades, he was a qualified doctor in sports medicine and held the presidency of the Calcutta Cricket and Football Club. His son, Leander Paes, frequently acknowledged his father's pivotal role in shaping his own sports journey, especially his dedication to representing India at the Olympics.
Besides hockey, Dr. Paes showcased his talents in divisional cricket, football, and rugby. His passion for rugby led him to serve as the president of the Indian Rugby Football Union from 1996 to 2002.
He passed away in Kolkata this morning after a short illness. He was 80 years old.
