Remembering Gilbertson Sangma

New Delhi [India] - The All India Football Federation (AIFF) expressed its sorrow over the passing of former Indian forward Gilbertson Sangma, who died in Guwahati on April 3, 2026, at the age of 70.


Hailing from Assam, Sangma made his mark on the international stage in 1975, as noted in the AIFF's announcement. He debuted for the senior national team against Indonesia on April 17, 1975, during the Marah Halim Cup held in Jakarta. Throughout this tournament, he earned three caps for India.


On the domestic front, Sangma was a standout player for Assam in the Santosh Trophy from 1972 to 1980, netting four goals during his tenure with the state team.


In club football, he played for Assam Police from 1972 to 1982, contributing significantly to the team's success, including a victory in the Bordoloi Trophy in 1981, where he scored the winning goal against Dempo in the final.
