Melbourne, Nov 5: Alan Jones, the 1980 Formula One world champion from Australia, has passed away at the age of 80, just days after celebrating his birthday.
His death occurred on November 5, following a brief illness, with sources indicating that he had recently been diagnosed with cancer. Motorsport Australia confirmed the news through a statement released by his wife, Amanda Buter-Davis.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Alan, who left us on November 5 after a short illness. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by his family and the many fans who supported him throughout his career. Alan dedicated his life to motorsport, creating a legacy that will endure through the countless individuals he inspired,” Amanda shared.
“His achievements, passion, and unique personality both on and off the track have left a lasting impact on the sport, both in Australia and internationally. We are grateful to everyone who was part of Alan’s journey, providing friendship, love, and support over the years,” she added.
Born in Melbourne, Jones became the second Australian, after Sir Jack Brabham, to win the F1 drivers’ world championship, achieving this feat with Williams in 1980. His aggressive racing style and fierce competitiveness made him a standout figure in the sport.
He is one of only five Australian drivers to have won a Formula One race, joining the ranks of Brabham, Mark Webber, Daniel Ricciardo, and Oscar Piastri.
The Australian Grand Prix Corporation also expressed their condolences, recognizing his significant contributions to the motorsport legacy in the country.
“We are deeply saddened by the news of Alan Jones's passing and extend our heartfelt sympathies to his family, friends, and loved ones,” stated the AGPC.
“As a Formula 1 world champion and one of Australia’s finest racing drivers, Alan holds a unique place in the history of our sport. His 1980 championship inspired a generation of Australian motorsport enthusiasts, and his victory at the Australian Grand Prix that same year remains the last time an Australian driver has triumphed at their home grand prix.”
“He leaves behind an extraordinary legacy in Australian motorsport and will be profoundly missed by the global motorsport community.”
Jones is survived by his wife Amanda and their children Christian, Amber, Zara, Jack, Camilla, and Emma.
