Trial of Healthcare Professionals in Diego Maradona's Death Begins
New Trial Commences for Medical Negligence in Maradona's Case
A new trial has commenced involving seven healthcare professionals accused of negligence linked to the death of Diego Maradona. This trial began in Argentina on Tuesday, following the football icon's shocking death at the age of 60. Maradona suffered a cardiac arrest while recuperating from surgery to address a blood clot in his brain. An investigative team of 20 members was established to look into the circumstances surrounding Maradona's death, and their findings in 2021 accused the medical team of acting in a manner deemed “inappropriate, deficient, and reckless.” The initial trial, which started in March 2025, was declared a mistrial after one of the judges, Julieta Makintach, resigned due to backlash over her involvement in a documentary about the case, which violated judicial protocols.
Identifying the Accused
Who Are The Accused?
Among those facing trial are physician Leopoldo Luque, who served as Maradona's personal doctor in his later years, psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, and psychologist Carlos Díaz. If convicted, they could face prison sentences ranging from eight to 25 years. The defense team argues that Maradona's death was due to pre-existing medical conditions and not a result of any wrongdoing. “We initiated this trial to prove that none of the seven defendants bear criminal responsibility, as there was no intent to harm Maradona,” stated Vadim Mischanchuk, the defense attorney for Cosachov. Meanwhile, Mario Baudry, representing Maradona's youngest son, Diego Fernando Maradona, hopes the court will set a precedent. “We expect the court to recognize the seriousness of the crime being examined, the implications of their judgment, and the significance of Diego to Argentinians and the global football community. I trust the judges will impose strict penalties on Luque, Cosachov, and Díaz, who ultimately failed in their duties as medical professionals,” he remarked.
