Finch Advocates for Head in Middle Order

Aaron Finch, the former captain of Australia, believes that Travis Head is ideally positioned to play in the middle order for the Australian team during the second Test against England, which is set to commence on December 4 in Brisbane. This match will feature a pink ball.

Head's Performance Sparks Discussion

Travis Head's remarkable century in the Ashes opener in Perth has ignited discussions about his batting position. He scored a stunning 123 runs off just 83 balls, leading Australia to successfully chase a target of 205 runs with eight wickets remaining. Usman Khawaja's role as an opener is now under scrutiny following Head's impressive performance after he was promoted due to Khawaja's back issues.

Finch's Insights on the Pink-Ball Test

Finch noted that the unique conditions of a pink-ball Test will influence Australia's lineup strategy. He expressed a preference for Head to bat in the middle order, stating, "If this wasn't a pink-ball test match coming up at the Gabba, I would tend to agree and say, you know what, maybe it is time to throw him [Head] up there and you just launch into it from day one of a Test."

He further elaborated, "However, considering the pink-ball factor and the potential impact of a new ball, I believe Head's explosive batting at No. 5 could be crucial when the ball softens and the pitch stabilizes. I still favor him at five to maintain that explosive presence in the middle order."

Recap of the Ashes Opener

Australia’s Mitchell Starc excelled with the ball, taking seven wickets for 58 runs.
