Tragic Incident at Denton Pickleball Court: Man Shot by Police
Police Shooting During Welfare Check
A man has reportedly lost his life following a police shooting during a welfare check at a pickleball court in Denton, Texas, on Sunday afternoon, as confirmed by local authorities. The Denton Police Department stated that officers were dispatched around 12:10 p.m. after receiving emergency calls about an adult male who appeared to be under the influence near a pickleball court located in the 1100 block of Riney Road.
Upon arrival, officers discovered the man on the north side of the courts. According to police reports, he had climbed onto a fence while wielding a metal rod and allegedly threatened officers, stating they would 'have to kill him.' Despite attempts at verbal de-escalation, the situation escalated when the man descended from the fence and charged at the officers while still holding the rod.
During the confrontation, one officer used a Taser, but it was ineffective. Subsequently, another officer discharged their firearm multiple times, hitting the suspect several times. Medical assistance was rendered immediately, and the man was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Fortunately, no officers or bystanders sustained injuries during the incident.
The identity of the deceased has not been disclosed, pending notification of family members by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office. Following departmental protocol, the officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave as the investigation is ongoing. The Denton Police Department is conducting an internal review, while the Texas Rangers are overseeing the criminal investigation related to the officer-involved shooting.
