Incident Overview
A heartbreaking event unfolded in the Maldives when Mahesh Ramchandran, an esteemed Arjuna Award recipient and Asian Games medalist, went missing following a speedboat accident near Felidhoo, the capital of Vaavu Atoll, on March 20. Mahesh, a former officer in the Indian Navy and a National Defence Academy graduate, was piloting a vessel owned by Gautam Singhania, the Managing Director of Raymond Group. Alongside him, five-time Indian National Rally champion Hari Singh is also unaccounted for after the boat capsized approximately two nautical miles southwest of Keyodhoo.
Injuries and Ongoing Search
Singhania sustained minor injuries during the incident and has since been transported to Mumbai for medical care, where he is reportedly recovering well. The Maldives National Defence Force's Male Area Command Coast Guard Second Squadron is actively engaged in the search for Mahesh and Hari. Reports indicate that Jagdish Singh Aithani, another passenger from the boat, remains in the Maldives, while Manik Bhimsen Bhardwaj has returned to India.

The tragic event occurred last Friday and involved seven individuals, including five Indians, a British citizen, and a Russian national. The boat capsized near Felidhoo, an island celebrated for its vibrant marine life and stunning lagoons, making it a popular diving destination. According to sources, the vessel involved was a high-speed Cigarette racing boat.
About Mahesh Ramchandran
Mahesh Ramchandran is a distinguished alumnus of Jawaharlal Nehru University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree. He has represented India in both the Asian Games and World Military Games, achieving a top 15 ranking in match racing globally. His accolades include multiple 'Yachtsman of the Year' awards from the Yachting Association of India.
As a decorated sailor, Mahesh secured a bronze medal in the 2002 Asian Games in the Enterprise class alongside Aashim Mongia. He improved his performance at the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, winning a silver medal in the Match Racing class with teammates Sanjeev Chauhan, Girdhari Yadav, and Nitin Mongia. Additionally, he claimed a gold medal in the Match Racing event at the 2007 World Military Games and was crowned champion at the Asian Sailing Championships in 2001, 2006, 2010, and 2012. In recognition of his achievements, he received the Arjuna Award in 2002 from former President APJ Abdul Kalam.
