Thibaut Courtois Contemplates Retirement After FIFA World Cup 2026
Courtois Considers Future in Football
Thibaut Courtois, the seasoned goalkeeper for Belgium, is contemplating his retirement from international football following the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026. The 34-year-old, who has been with Real Madrid since 2018, has also suggested that he might step away from club football. Recently, Real Madrid appointed José Mourinho as their new manager, a move that Courtois welcomes, having previously played under Mourinho at Chelsea FC. He expressed satisfaction with their relationship but understands the need to perform at a high level to secure his position in the starting lineup.
Retirement Thoughts from Courtois
In discussing his potential retirement, Courtois remarked, 'I’m uncertain about discussing my future at this moment. There’s a possibility I might not continue after this tournament.' He emphasized his desire to play for several more years, stating, 'To achieve that, I must prioritize my physical health. My family is present, as this could be my final tournament.' However, he remains open to the idea of continuing, saying, 'If we perform well in the World Cup, I may reconsider. The team's morale will influence my final decision, which I will discuss with the coach, technical director, and medical staff.'
Future at Real Madrid
Regarding his tenure at Real Madrid, Courtois shared, 'At Real Madrid, contracts are typically renewed annually for players over 30. I’m not overly focused on that right now. If I maintain good performance, my contract will likely be extended.' He acknowledged the club's elite standards, stating, 'Real Madrid is a prestigious club, so they will eventually need to find a successor for me. My goal is to conclude my career at Real Madrid.'
