The Rise of Pickleball in India

Pickleball is experiencing a remarkable surge in popularity across India, largely due to the increasing number of national tournaments being organized nationwide. These events provide players with valuable exposure to high-level competition, diverse playing styles, and the pressure of competitive play. The Indian Pickleball Association (IPA) and Pickleball World Ranking (PWR) are pivotal in this expansion, enhancing the domestic tournament schedule and introducing significant competitive events in new cities.

At the recent Kolkata Open, Tejas Gulati, an Indian pickleball player, emphasized the importance of such tournaments for elevating the sport's standards in India. "IPA and PWR are doing an excellent job by hosting regular tournaments," Gulati remarked after clinching the Pro Doubles title with partner Kashyap. He noted that these competitions are crucial for players to gain experience and develop their match temperament.

Gulati explained that frequent tournament participation helps players learn to manage pressure and close out matches effectively. "You learn how to stay mentally strong and handle pressure situations. Regular exposure to tournaments is vital for player development," he stated.

The Kolkata Open showcased the rapid growth of pickleball beyond traditional sporting hubs. Although Kolkata has a limited number of professional players, Gulati observed that the tournament attracted participants from various regions, including first-time competitors from places like Nagaland. "For many, this is their first major event, providing them with exposure to the level of Indian pickleball," he added.

The event featured several prominent Indian players, allowing younger and emerging talents to witness top-tier standards up close. "India’s leading players were present, including Aman, Purvansh, and Yuvraj," Gulati noted. "When players from different regions see that level firsthand, it fosters growth in cities like Kolkata."

Over the past year, the scale of tournaments in Kolkata has noticeably increased. "This is a significant tournament for Kolkata. More All India tournaments are being held here, and the level of competition is improving each year," Gulati explained. He highlighted that the previous PWR event was a 200-level tournament, while the current one is a 400-level event, attracting players from across the country.

For Gulati, the most important lesson from the Kolkata Open transcended medals or rankings. "Comebacks are always possible," he stated. "You should never give up, regardless of the scoreline." As pickleball continues to flourish in India, events like the Kolkata Open are becoming essential platforms for experienced professionals, juniors, and first-time national competitors to share experiences, learn from one another, and collectively elevate the standard of Indian pickleball.
