The Sheth Family: Pioneers of Pickleball in India
A Family United by Pickleball
The surge in pickleball's popularity is becoming increasingly evident, with projections indicating it could evolve into a billion-dollar industry by 2032. This growth can be attributed to various factors, particularly its appeal to families seeking enjoyment, fitness, and stronger bonds. A notable example is the Sheth family from Ahmedabad, who have become the largest pickleball-playing household in India. Their journey transcends mere fitness; they actively participate in professional competitions within India's PWR circuits, which cater to players of all ages and skill levels.
The Sheths travel together to tournaments, supporting one another while sharing insights from the sidelines. Their commitment to the sport has led to the emergence of two talented players, Atharva and Anshi Sheth.
The Catalyst for Change
At the forefront of this family's pickleball journey is 44-year-old Ratnaraj Sheth, who recognized the sport's potential in 2022. He encouraged the entire family to engage in pickleball for fitness, enjoyment, and quality time together. Out of nine family members, seven embraced this challenge, aiming not just for recreation but for professional growth. The three who opted out include their 78-year-old mother, Ratnaben, and Ratnaraj's daughters, Aarjavi and Richa, who chose to focus on their studies and careers.
Among the younger generation, Anshi and Atharva have already made a name for themselves in the pickleball community. Atharva secured a silver medal at the 2025 Pickleball World Cup, while Anshi was the first in the family to compete at the World Cup in Peru in 2024. They also won the mixed doubles title at the Arena One Open last year.
The Family's Transformation
Chintan, Ratnaraj's elder brother, shared insights on how the family's pickleball journey began. "Our primary goal was to maintain fitness. We wanted a game that everyone could enjoy for their health and well-being. Instead of just playing for fun, we are now competing in tournaments," he explained.
Chintan emphasized the fitness benefits of pickleball, countering the misconception that it lacks physical demands. He noted that both he and Ratnaraj had struggled with weight issues, and playing pickleball has significantly improved their fitness levels. The family trains at Dinker's Pickleball Academy under the guidance of India's chief national coach, Dhiren Patel, dedicating two hours daily, six days a week, to the sport.
Strengthening Family Bonds
Chintan remarked on the positive impact pickleball has had on their family dynamics. "This sport has truly transformed our family. We enjoy discussing pickleball at the dinner table, sharing strategies, and traveling together for tournaments. Our bond has strengthened significantly through this shared passion," he stated.

"Our family members range from 10 to 50 years old, and we have seen players in their 70s competing in tournaments. Pickleball is adaptable; it can be played at varying intensity levels, making it suitable for everyone."
He further explained that pickleball teaches valuable life skills such as focus, time management, agility, and patience. Despite their diverse professional commitments, the family has successfully balanced their responsibilities with their passion for the sport. They plan their schedules around tournaments to ensure they can participate fully.
Achievements and Future Endeavors
Ratnaraj has represented Gujarat at the national level, while Atharva has become a standout player in the family. Anshi has also earned several medals on the PWR circuit, but Atharva's silver medal at the World Cup remains a highlight for the family. "Atharva serves as an inspiration for younger players, emphasizing the importance of discipline and practice," Chintan remarked.
The Sheth family has become a source of inspiration for many, showcasing the joy of playing together and traveling as a unit. "People are delighted to see us enjoying this sport as a family. Our opponents recognize us, and many express a desire to join in on the fun," Chintan shared.
As they prepare for the Madhya Pradesh Open, a PWR 400 event scheduled for May 15 and 16 in Indore, the Sheth family continues to exemplify the spirit of pickleball, proving that it is more than just a game—it's a way of life.
