The Rise of Pickleball: Empowering Women Over 40 in Sports
Pickleball: A Sport for All Ages
Sports play a crucial role in promoting a healthy lifestyle, yet not every sport suits everyone. The emergence of pickleball has transformed the landscape, particularly for women over 40, encouraging many to return to sports after years away due to family or work commitments. This inclusive sport has created vibrant community courts where women actively participate alongside men.
In India, the trend has gained momentum, with players like Gaurika Chopra, a gold medallist at the IPA Nationals, embracing pickleball just a few years ago. She has quickly become a leading figure in the masters category. Gaurika shared how pickleball has revitalized her life, stating, 'I have no time for anything else. Between work, my son, and playing, I’m constantly busy.' She now trains daily at her backyard court while managing her brother's luxury interior business.
Accessibility and Community Engagement
The sport's low entry barrier and less physically demanding nature, especially in doubles, make it appealing for older individuals. However, as players advance, they discover the physical challenges involved. Nazneen Rahman, a 50-year-old masters-level tennis player, highlighted the community aspect of pickleball as a significant draw, stating, 'For women, after a certain age, engaging in sports offers health benefits and fosters social connections.'
Unlike traditional racquet sports that require intense physical exertion, pickleball can be both leisurely and competitive. Gaurika noted that its aerobic nature allows people of all ages and skill levels to participate, contributing to its rapid popularity. The emotional and cognitive benefits are substantial, according to sports psychologist Deveshi Khanna, who emphasized pickleball's accessibility and social nature as key factors in its growth.
Rediscovering Identity and Confidence
Women over 40 are finding a renewed sense of identity through pickleball, as noted by Monica Menon, a player and tournament organizer. She remarked, 'For women in their 40s, it's a time to reclaim physical and emotional strength.' Nazneen added that pickleball fosters family engagement, allowing parents and children to compete together, enhancing community bonds.
Gaurika, who is approaching 51, relishes the friendships formed on the courts, finding a fulfilling life beyond her previous career in journalism. She expressed how pickleball provides new goals and helps her maintain fitness, steering clear of the health issues often associated with aging. 'It offers a break from daily life and promotes physical activity,' she explained.
Challenges and Opportunities for Women
Despite the positive impact of pickleball on her life, Gaurika voiced concerns about the limited opportunities for women in tournaments compared to men. 'In many events, about 70% are tailored for men, leaving women with fewer categories,' she lamented. However, she acknowledged that this could be due to the lower participation of women in competitions.
The upcoming Guwahati Open aims to address this by offering six categories specifically for women and girls, including divisions for those over 40 and 50. While challenges persist, the growth of pickleball has significantly democratized sports for women, particularly those over 40, in recent years.
