Overview of The Hundred Auction

The auction for The Hundred took place on March 12, where eight franchises acquired various players from different nationalities. Among these franchises, four are owned by Indian entities, who also have stakes in prominent IPL teams. These include Sunrisers Leeds (linked to Sunrisers Hyderabad), Manchester Super Giants (associated with Lucknow Super Giants), MI London (connected to Mumbai Indians), and Southern Brave (affiliated with Delhi Capitals). The acquisition of Pakistan spinner Abrar Ahmed for £190,000 by Sunrisers Leeds, led by Kavya Maran, sparked significant criticism. However, they were not the only Indian franchise interested in Pakistani talent. Southern Brave, owned by GMR Co, which also owns Delhi Capitals, expressed intentions to recruit several Pakistani players, as confirmed by their head coach Hemang Badani. “We had a few players in our list,” Badani stated, as reported by a local media outlet.

Focus on Building a Strong Team

'Looking At Securing The Best Squad'

Hemang Badani emphasized that their objective was to assemble the strongest possible team, which involved selecting players that would enhance their overall combination. They aimed to secure either an overseas or local spinner to finalize their lineup. Ultimately, they succeeded in signing renowned England leg-spinner Adil Rashid. “The bottom line is that we’re looking at securing the best squad. And the best squad is what we felt the way we went forward. Because we had (Tristan) Stubbs already, we had Marcus Stoinis already. We were looking at either an overseas spinner or a local spinner. And we secured Adil Rashid,” Badani explained. He also noted, “The key to auctions is maintaining discipline and adhering to your strategy. Even when the auction seems to deviate from your expectations, patience and adaptability are crucial,” added the former Indian cricketer.
