Shanghai, Oct 14: Rafael Jodar showcased his resilience by overcoming a set deficit for the third time in a row, securing his spot in the quarter-finals of the Shanghai Masters, one of the final ATP Masters 1000 tournaments of the year.
The 20-year-old athlete triumphed over Botic van de Zandschulp with a score of 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-2 in a match that lasted two hours and thirty minutes, making him the second-youngest player to reach the quarter-finals in the tournament's history.
Jakub Mensik holds the record as the youngest quarter-finalist, achieving this feat at the age of 19 during the 2024 Shanghai Masters.
Van de Zandschulp started strong, successfully saving two break points in the first set and executing a flawless tie-break to take the lead. However, Jodar rallied back, gradually building momentum and ultimately securing his place in the quarter-finals on his debut at this event, as reported by the ATP Tour.
This victory bolstered Jodar's chances of qualifying for the ATP Finals. Competing in his first full season on the ATP Tour, he improved his record to 41-16 for the year and currently ranks 11th in the ATP Live Race To Turin, trailing 131 points behind 10th-placed Novak Djokovic as he aims for a spot at the prestigious season-ending tournament.
"I felt I was making the right moves, but he executed crucial points in the tie-break better than I did, which is why he took the first set. I only had two break points. In the second set, I managed to secure an early break, which helped me gain better control of the match. I'm very pleased with how it turned out today," Jodar remarked following his victory.
Jodar's next challenge in the Masters 1000 event will be a quarter-final clash against either fourth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime or Casper Ruud.
Later in the day, Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas, both looking to revive their careers, will face off in the fourth round of the Shanghai Masters.
Medvedev, the champion from 2019, was ranked World No. 18 upon his arrival in Shanghai last year. His journey to the semi-finals and 43 match victories this year have propelled him back to No. 6, putting him in a strong position to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals.
Tsitsipas, a former World No. 3, found himself at No. 88 in June due to back issues and inconsistent performance. However, after defeating Taylor Fritz in the third round for his 34th win of the year, he has returned to the Top 40. He also celebrated his 400th career victory in the second round against Luciano Darderi.
