London, July 2: In a commanding performance, Novak Djokovic triumphed over Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets, securing his spot in the third round of Wimbledon on Thursday (IST).
Djokovic completed the match in just 98 minutes, winning 6-3, 6-4, 6-2, marking his 20th appearance in the third round of this prestigious grass-court tournament.
The two players have faced each other frequently over the past eight years, with Djokovic emerging victorious in 12 out of their 14 meetings, including the last 11 consecutively.
Tsitsipas struggled to find his rhythm as the first set slipped away in just 27 minutes. Although he showed more determination in the second set, serving with improved power and precision, he could only hold Djokovic at bay for eight games before the Serb took control.
After an hour of play, Tsitsipas found himself facing another break point. Despite his efforts, he couldn't keep the ball from Djokovic's reach. In a pivotal moment during a 15-stroke rally, the younger player faltered, allowing Djokovic to take a two-set lead.
In the third set, Djokovic wasted no time, breaking Tsitsipas for a 3-2 advantage and cruising to victory with an impressive tally of 33 winners against just seven unforced errors.
"I felt very happy, satisfied, and joyful on the court playing this way," Djokovic remarked during his on-court interview. "Once I gained momentum... that game when I went 5-2 up was one of my best return games in a while. I just went for my shots, feeling more relaxed and less tense in my head."
