Jannik Sinner Faces Fitness Challenges Ahead of Wimbledon 2026
Sinner's Title Defense at Wimbledon 2026
As Jannik Sinner prepares to defend his title at Wimbledon 2026, he enters as a strong contender, especially with Carlos Alcaraz absent. However, his recent performance at the French Open raised eyebrows when he was eliminated in the second round by Juan Manuel Cerundolo. Despite winning the first two sets and leading 5-1 in the third, Sinner succumbed to the intense heat, which seemed to impact his physical condition significantly. This defeat has sparked concerns regarding his ability to endure long matches, as he has yet to win a match exceeding three hours and 48 minutes.
Just prior to the French Open, Sinner showcased his skills by winning the Rome Masters, but he struggled with cramps during his match against Daniil Medvedev, which was interrupted by rain. This pattern of physical difficulties during extended matches has become increasingly apparent. Unfortunately for Sinner, the weather in the UK has recently turned extreme, with temperatures soaring close to 40 degrees Celsius, mirroring the challenging conditions he faced in Paris. His greatest challenge may not be his opponents but rather his own fitness.

Vijay Amritraj Opens Up on Jannik Sinner's Problems
During a discussion at JioStar Media Day ahead of Wimbledon 2026, Indian tennis icon Vijay Amritraj addressed Sinner's ongoing struggles. He noted that Sinner's issues might be more complex than they appear, although he offered some hope, stating that temperatures are expected to decrease soon. Amritraj shared his observations from a recent visit to the center court, mentioning that the extreme heat has affected the grass surface. He remarked, "It's a significant concern that the heat exacerbates Sinner's existing issues. Being up 5-1 in the third set and failing to secure the win indicates a serious challenge for him. However, the forecast suggests a drop in temperature after Sunday, which could benefit him. Currently, temperatures are around 37 to 40 degrees, but by Monday and Tuesday, they are expected to fall to 21 or 22 degrees," he explained.
Amritraj also highlighted that the grass court's condition is drying out due to the heatwave, raising questions about whether adjustments will be made to maintain its quality for the tournament's early rounds.
