Madrid, April 20: Jannik Sinner, currently ranked World No. 1, is set to headline the Madrid Open as he pursues his fifth consecutive ATP Masters 1000 title. The draw for this prestigious clay-court tournament was revealed on Monday.

The Italian star, who has showcased exceptional form throughout the Masters circuit, will kick off his tournament against a qualifier. Should he advance as anticipated, he may face Canada's Gabriel Diallo in the third round. Potential challenges could arise from Tommy Paul in the fourth round, with Alex de Minaur as a possible quarter-final opponent.

De Minaur's section includes a mix of both emerging talents and seasoned players. Brazil's Joao Fonseca and Spain's promising Rafael Jodar are also in the same quarter. The 19-year-old Jodar arrives in Madrid following impressive performances, including a title win in Marrakech and a semi-final finish in Barcelona. He could meet De Minaur in the second round if he overcomes Jesper de Jong. Fonseca, on the other hand, will begin against either Zizou Bergs or former US Open champion Marin Cilic.

Examining Sinner's potential path, the semi-finals could see him up against a strong trio: Ben Shelton, Lorenzo Musetti, or Arthur Fils. Both Shelton and Fils are entering the tournament with momentum from recent title victories in Munich and Barcelona, respectively, and they could clash as early as the fourth round. Musetti, who reached the semi-finals in Madrid last year, will face either Hubert Hurkacz or a qualifier, with possible later matches against Jiri Lehecka or Jack Draper.

Sinner's recent performance has been outstanding, having secured Masters titles in Paris, Indian Wells, Miami, and Monte-Carlo, dropping only one set across these tournaments, which highlights his dominance and consistency. However, he has yet to progress beyond the quarter-finals in Madrid, a record he is keen to change.

In the lower half of the draw, second seed Alexander Zverev is on track for a potential quarter-final clash with Daniil Medvedev, who leads their head-to-head record 14-8. Zverev, a two-time Madrid champion, will start against either Nuno Borges or Mariano Navone and may face Ugo Humbert and Jakub Mensik in the early rounds. Medvedev is expected to meet either Flavio Cobolli or Learner Tien in the last 16.

Additionally, third seed Felix Auger-Aliassime will begin his campaign against Sebastian Baez or a qualifier, while eighth seed Alexander Bublik could face Stefanos Tsitsipas. Defending champion Casper Ruud is also in this section, starting against either Jaume Munar or Alexander Shevchenko.

Notably, the tournament will miss two of its biggest stars, Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic, both of whom have withdrawn due to fitness issues.

Alcaraz expressed his disappointment on social media, stating, "There are some news that are incredibly hard to share. Madrid is home, one of the most special places on my calendar, and that's why it hurts so much not to be able to play here for the second year in a row. It hurts especially not to be in front of my people, in a tournament that means so much. Thank you for the unwavering affection, and I hope we see each other soon."

Djokovic also announced his withdrawal, saying, "Madrid, unfortunately I won't be able to compete this year. I am continuing my recovery in order to be back soon. Hasta pronto!"

The fourth ATP Masters 1000 event of the season is set to commence on Wednesday, with the final scheduled for May 3.
