Cobolli's Remarkable Victory

Flavio Cobolli delivered an outstanding performance, defeating world number three Alexander Zverev in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, during the ATP Munich semifinal. This match was particularly significant for Cobolli, as he faced the defending champion while also grappling with profound personal grief. Just hours before the match, he received devastating news about the passing of a young friend from his club in Rome, who tragically fell from a window.

Despite his heartbreak, Cobolli channeled his emotions into his game, overpowering Zverev with 32 winners and losing only eight points on serve. After achieving what could be the most significant victory of his career, Cobolli was overwhelmed with emotion and broke down in tears.

“He left us too soon; this victory is for him,” Cobolli whispered. He later shared on Instagram, “A special win today. Not just for tennis, but for something bigger. Thinking of Mattia, a young boy from my club in Parioli.”

Emotional Tribute from Cobolli

In a heartfelt message on social media, Cobolli expressed his sorrow for his young friend. “Every point I play, every ball I touch, every step I take, I will think of you. I will play for you and carry you with me wherever I go. I remember your smile and your eagerness to learn. The tennis school will never be the same without you, but I promise you will never be forgotten. I love you so much, little Mattia.”

He also shared touching words for Mattia's father, Paolo. “I’ve known you for so long, and you are a fantastic dad. We will always be here for you; be strong for him, as he will be watching over us.”

After his victory over Zverev, Cobolli remarked that it was one of his best matches against a close friend. “It was one of my best matches ever, against one of my best friends on Tour. It was tough to play against him.”

Upcoming Match Against Ben Shelton

Cobolli is set to compete against American Ben Shelton for the title on Sunday. Shelton secured his place in the final by defeating Alex Molcan in straight sets. After losing to Zverev in last year's final, Shelton is eager to claim the title, but Cobolli's current form will make him a formidable opponent. “Flavio is playing great tennis, as you saw in his match against Sascha. I’m really looking forward to our match,” Shelton stated during the post-match conference.
