New York, Sep 5: Emma Navarro delivered a stunning upset at the US Open, while Taylor Townsend secured her spot in the fourth round for the second consecutive year amidst a day filled with intense matches in the women's singles.
Navarro, who reached the semifinals at Flushing Meadows in 2024, triumphed over seventh seed Karolina Muchova with a score of 6-3, 7-5 in their inaugural encounter. The American showcased her best performance during the crucial moments, clinching the last three games of both sets, marking her third victory against a Top 10 player since her recent injury recovery. Muchova faced her earliest exit from the US Open since 2022.
Sixth seed Linda Noskova also faced a tough challenge, managing to defeat American 29th seed Ann Li with a score of 6-2, 6-7(6), 6-2 on Court 17. Noskova initially dominated the match, leading 6-2, 3-0, but Li mounted a strong comeback, even saving a match point in the second-set tiebreak before leveling the match. Noskova regained her composure when it mattered, winning the final four games of the third set.
Taylor Townsend continued her impressive form by overcoming 15th seed Diana Shnaider in a grueling 2-hour, 27-minute match, finishing with a score of 6-2, 6-7(3), 6-3. After a swift first set, Shnaider fought back from a 3-5 deficit in the second set, pushing the match to a deciding set on her seventh set point.
Townsend responded strongly, winning the last three games to secure her place in the fourth round, where she will face defending champion and world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, who extended her winning streak in New York to 16 matches with a straight-sets victory over Kamilla Rakhimova.
Third seed Jessica Pegula also faced a challenge, bouncing back from a poor start to defeat 31st seed Leylah Fernandez 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 in a match lasting 2 hours and 11 minutes. This victory keeps Pegula's hopes of becoming world No. 1 alive, but she must win her first Grand Slam title to achieve this goal. Her next opponent will be 36-year-old Sorana Cirstea, who continued her impressive season by defeating 19th seed Jasmine Paolini 6-3, 6-3.
Additionally, 11th seed Marta Kostyuk made a confident stride forward, defeating Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-3, 6-2. After an early setback in the second set, Kostyuk won six consecutive games to reach the US Open fourth round for the second year in a row.
