Controversy Erupts in French Open Match Between Ruud and Fonseca
Dramatic Fourth-Round Clash
The highly anticipated fourth-round match at the French Open between Casper Ruud and Joao Fonseca was marred by controversy, raising questions about the Grand Slam's reliance on line judges instead of electronic systems. In a thrilling encounter, Fonseca continued his impressive run, advancing to the quarterfinals, but the outcome might have differed had electronic line calling been utilized.
After dropping the first set 5-7, Ruud sought to rally in the second set, where he had a crucial set point at 8-7 in the tie-breaker. However, a forehand from Fonseca was not called out by the line judge. Chair umpire Louise Engzell reviewed the mark and deemed the ball in, allowing Fonseca to win the tie-breaker and take a commanding 2-0 lead. Subsequent replays from Hawk-Eye revealed that the ball had actually landed out, suggesting Ruud would have won the set had the correct call been made. Ruud managed to secure the third set 5-7, but Fonseca proved too strong in the fourth, winning 6-2 and securing his place in the quarterfinals.
Yes, but i still think Fonseca would have won. Guess we'll never know now, though. Tough for Ruud. https://t.co/bcFxO9qt3I

Had Ruud clinched the second set, the match dynamics could have shifted significantly. He expressed his disappointment, stating that winning the second set could have altered the match's outcome. “There was one set point in the second – or a couple,” he reflected. “The forehand he hit was very close, either in or out. It was ruled in, of course. If I had won that set, I could have been up 2-1 instead of down 2-0. So that’s unfortunate for me,” he added.
Criticism of Roland Garros
Jim Courier, a former world No. 1 and four-time Grand Slam champion, criticized the decision to forgo electronic line calling during the match. In his commentary, he remarked, “I’m not claiming that electronic line calling is flawless, but it certainly makes fewer errors than human officials. Matches should be determined by the players, not by human judgment, especially in 2026.”
Ruud Acknowledges Fonseca's Skill
Despite the controversy, Ruud praised Fonseca's performance, acknowledging his impressive skills. “I anticipated a challenging match, and it certainly was. He has very few weaknesses in his game and has already defeated several top players, including Novak just two days ago. His style of play is truly remarkable,” Ruud stated.
