New Delhi, Oct 5: World No. 25 Anastasia Potapova has decided to end her 2026 season prematurely, prioritizing her recovery after a year filled with both impressive ranking achievements and numerous injuries.
Potapova shared her decision on social media, indicating that her body had been signaling the necessity for a break.
“My season has to come to an end. Unfortunately, lately my body has been giving me more and more signs that it’s time to stop. For me, that’s the clearest sign that I need to take a break, give my body the times it needs to recover and come back stronger. See you in 2027!" she stated.
This announcement followed her retirement from the opening round of the Beijing tournament against Sinja Kraus due to a right shoulder injury. Although she was scheduled to compete in Wuhan next, she will now focus on regaining her fitness for the upcoming season.
Her decision marks the end of a season where Potapova made significant strides in the rankings. Starting the year at No. 97 before Linz, she climbed steadily to achieve a career-high ranking of No. 25, which she currently holds.
Potapova's most successful period occurred on clay, where she reached the finals in Linz, made it to the Madrid semi-finals as a lucky loser, and advanced to the fourth rounds at both Rome and Roland Garros.
Her performance at the French Open included a standout victory over defending champion Coco Gauff, where she came back from a set down to win 4-6, 7-6(1), 6-4 in the third round.
However, the physical challenges of the season hindered her progress. Potapova began the Australian swing with a broken finger on her non-dominant hand.
After Roland Garros, she faced another retirement at s’Hertogenbosch due to illness during her second-round match against Zeynep Sonmez. Her injury woes continued in Berlin, where she retired after losing the first set to Ekaterina Alexandrova, this time due to neck issues.
The US Open also proved to be a tough moment for her. During a three-set match against Mirra Andreeva, Potapova fell while pursuing a forehand and injured her left knee. Despite a medical timeout and significant taping, her movement was noticeably limited, and Andreeva ultimately won the match, leaving Potapova in tears as she exited the court.
Her latest setback in Beijing has concluded a season where her ranking advancements were overshadowed by ongoing health challenges.
