Historic Victory for Eala

Three years prior, Alexandra Eala celebrated her graduation at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca, receiving her diploma from Iga Swiatek, a three-time Roland Garros champion and former World No. 1. Fast forward to July 4, 2026, and the 20-year-old Filipino player achieved a remarkable feat by defeating the defending Wimbledon champion 7-6, 6-2 on Centre Court. This victory not only marked a significant milestone in Eala's career but also solidified her status as one of tennis's most promising young talents.

Who is Alexandra Eala?

Hailing from Quezon City, Philippines, Eala's journey into tennis was unique. She practiced on a makeshift court over a local basketball area, often having to maneuver her shots around basketball hoops due to the lack of proper grass courts. Athleticism is a family trait; her mother, Rizza Maniego-Eala, was a competitive swimmer and a bronze medalist at the Southeast Asian Games, while her brother, Miko, also played collegiate tennis. Her late grandfather, Roberto, was her first coach.

Her talent quickly became evident in local competitions. At the age of 13, after winning a tournament in France, Eala and her brother relocated to Mallorca, where she secured a full-time scholarship at the Rafa Nadal Academy. There, she balanced her studies with rigorous training, recovery, and match play, laying the groundwork for her professional career. Joan Bosch, one of the academy's head coaches, has been instrumental in her development, having previously worked with notable players like Carlos Moya.

Eala's Rise in Professional Tennis

Despite a stellar junior career, highlighted by winning the 2022 US Open girls' singles title, Eala's breakthrough on the professional circuit came at the 2025 Miami Open. Competing as a wildcard ranked No. 140, she reached the WTA 1000 semifinals, defeating Grand Slam champions Jelena Ostapenko and Madison Keys, and achieving her first win over Swiatek. This momentum continued throughout the season, culminating in her first WTA singles final at the Eastbourne International and her first WTA 125 title in Guadalajara, which propelled her into the WTA Top 50 and earned her a nomination for WTA Newcomer of the Year.

The 2026 grass-court season has further established her as a rising star in tennis. After reaching the semifinals at the Berlin Open, Eala made history as the first Filipino player to be seeded at a Grand Slam, entering Wimbledon as the No. 29 seed. Her recent victory over Swiatek made her the first Filipino in the Open Era to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam, earning accolades from tennis legend Maria Sharapova, who referred to her as "a star." Reflecting on her achievement, Eala expressed her emotions, stating, "I don't know how to describe it. I made it to the second week of the slam and it's amazing for me." She is set to face Jasmine Paolini in the fourth round on July 6.
