London, July 1: Alexander Zverev, the reigning French Open champion, faced a tough challenge at Wimbledon on Tuesday, narrowly defeating Belgian player Alexander Blockx to secure his spot in the second round at the All-England Club. The second-seeded German triumphed with a score of 6-4, 6-7(8), 7-6(5), 7-6(0) in a match held on Centre Court.
This encounter marked the third meeting between Zverev and Blockx this season, and once again, Zverev had to work hard to emerge victorious.
Having recently claimed his first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros, Zverev aims to continue his success on the grass courts of Wimbledon, where he has yet to progress beyond the fourth round.
In a serve-heavy match, the 29-year-old Zverev and 21-year-old Blockx combined for 37 aces, with only three breaks of serve throughout the four sets. Zverev showcased his resilience during crucial moments, outlasting Blockx in several intense baseline exchanges, extending his winning streak at major tournaments to eight.
With this victory, Zverev now holds a 3-0 lead over Blockx in their ATP Head2Head encounters, having previously defeated him at ATP Masters 1000 events in Madrid and Rome earlier this year. The two players shared a friendly moment after their three-hour battle at Wimbledon.
Should Zverev continue to perform well, he could ascend to No. 2 in the PIF ATP Rankings. His next challenge will be against Valentin Royer, who advanced by defeating British wild card Harry Wendelken 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Blockx is currently enjoying a career-high ranking of No. 36 after a breakout season, which included reaching the finals at the Next Gen ATP Finals last December.
In another match, Jakub Mensik triumphed over home player Toby Samuel in a thrilling five-set encounter, winning 5-7, 6-3, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(10-7) after a grueling four hours and 21 minutes on No. 3 Court.
The 15th-seeded Czech player clinched victory by winning five of the last six points in a Match Tie-break against Samuel, who recently reached his first ATP Tour semifinal at the Lexus Eastbourne Open.
Mensik has demonstrated a knack for five-set matches this year, having won four out of five such encounters, including a notable victory over Pablo Carreno Busta at the Australian Open in January. Despite the physical toll of his matches, he also managed to defeat Andrey Rublev in a five-set fourth-round match at Roland Garros, leading to his first Grand Slam semi-final.
Looking ahead, Mensik aims to build on his marathon win as he prepares for a second-round clash against either Grigor Dimitrov or qualifier Dane Sweeny. The two-time ATP Tour champion is hoping to reach the third round at Wimbledon for the second consecutive year.
