New York, Sep 4: After a grueling opening match that lasted nearly five hours, top-seeded Alexander Zverev showcased his resilience once more by overcoming Quentin Halys with a score of 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-7(3), 6-3, in another intense five-set battle at Arthur Ashe Stadium, securing his place in the third round of the US Open.

Following his lengthy first-round encounter, Zverev took time to find his rhythm against the French player ranked No. 52, with this match clocking in at four hours and 33 minutes.

Despite not being at his best, struggling with his signature backhand and serve, Zverev managed to elevate his game during crucial moments, while Halys faced challenges under pressure.

A finalist at the US Open in 2020, where he lost to Dominic Thiem after leading two sets, Zverev is determined to improve on that performance this year, competing as the top seed for the first time in a major tournament.

Next, Zverev will face 25th seed Alejandro Tabilo, a player he has previously defeated in their last two encounters, including a first-round match at the US Open last year.

Tabilo, who has three titles to his name, prefers clay courts. Their previous meeting at the 2024 Rome semifinals saw Zverev struggle initially but ultimately triumph in three sets.

This season, Zverev has been impressive at Grand Slam events, reaching the semifinals at the Australian Open, winning at Roland Garros, and making it to the Wimbledon final. He is the first male player to achieve 20 wins in Grand Slam tournaments this year, boasting a remarkable record of 20-2.
