Alexander Zverev Advances to US Open Semifinals for Third Time

New York, Sep 10: Alexander Zverev secured his spot in the US Open semifinals for the third time in his career on Thursday (IST), defeating Botic van de Zandschulp with a score of 6-2, 7-5, 6-1.
This victory marks Zverev's fourth semifinal appearance in a major this season and the 13th of his career. The top seed, who clinched his first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros earlier this year, leads the ATP Tour with an impressive 51 match wins this season. Notably, his 23 major match victories this year are the highest for a German man in a single season, surpassing Boris Becker's record of 22 set in 1989.
Currently, Zverev is the only player left in the men's singles draw who has previously won a Grand Slam title.
Although Zverev started the quarterfinal match slowly, committing five double faults in the first set, he quickly regained control, breaking his opponent's serve twice to secure a straightforward win in the opening frame.
The second set proved to be more competitive, as van de Zandschulp capitalized on Zverev's inconsistent play, coming close to leveling the score with two late break points. However, Zverev managed to hold his serve and thwart the Dutch player's momentum.
The third set was dominated by Zverev, who continued his strong performance, adding another Grand Slam victory to his impressive record this year.
With this win, Zverev becomes the ninth man in the Open Era to reach the semifinals of all four Grand Slam tournaments in a single season. He began this Grand Slam year by reaching the semifinals at the Australian Open, followed by a victory at Roland Garros against Flavio Cobolli in a five-set final, and a runner-up finish at Wimbledon, where he lost to World No. 1 Jannik Sinner.
