Temba Bavuma Celebrates Historic ICC World Test Championship Win with Son
South Africa Claims First ICC World Title
On June 14, in London, South Africa's captain Temba Bavuma was spotted joyfully celebrating the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final victory alongside his son after defeating Australia by five wickets at Lord's.
The ICC shared a heartwarming image of Bavuma and his son on their Instagram, captioning it, "Father's Day came early for Temba Bavuma."
This triumph marks South Africa's inaugural world title in international cricket, and it is their second ICC trophy since the ICC Knockout in 1998.
Meanwhile, Australia's captain Pat Cummins saw his impressive streak come to an end, which included retaining the Ashes against England and winning the WTC mace and the 50-over World Cup against India.
Aiden Markram delivered a standout performance with a century, while Bavuma, despite battling an injury, contributed a total of 102 runs as South Africa successfully chased a challenging target of 282 runs on Day 4. Kagiso Rabada was exceptional with the ball, claiming nine wickets throughout the match.
During the match's first day, South Africa won the toss and chose to bowl first. They dominated early on, with Rabada (5/51) and Marco Jansen (3/49) reducing Australia to 67/4.
Australia managed to recover with a 79-run partnership between Steve Smith (66 off 112 balls, including 10 fours) and Beau Webster (72 off 92 balls, with 11 fours), ultimately reaching 212 all out.
In response, Australia struck early, leaving South Africa at 43/4 by the end of Day 1, with Bavuma (3*) and Bedingham (0*) at the crease.
Pat Cummins' six-wicket haul (6/28) helped Australia dismiss South Africa for 138 runs, establishing a 74-run lead, despite a solid partnership between Bavuma (36 off 84 balls) and Bedingham (45 off 111 balls).
In their second innings, Australia found themselves at 73/7, but a 61-run partnership between Alex Carey (46 off 50 balls) and Mitchell Starc (58* off 136 balls) helped them reach 207 runs, setting a target of 281.
Rabada (4/59) and Ngidi (3/38) were the standout bowlers for South Africa.
In the chase, South Africa lost Ryan Rickelton early, but a 61-run partnership between Wiaan Mulder (27 off 50 balls) and Markram set the stage. A significant 147-run partnership between Markram (136 off 207 balls) and Bavuma (66 off 134 balls) sealed the deal for South Africa.
Despite Starc's efforts (3/63), Kyle Verreyne hit the winning runs, leading South Africa to their first ICC title since 1998. Markram was awarded the 'Player of the Match.'
