Tanvi Patri Claims U17 Title
Fifteen-year-old Tanvi Patri emerged victorious in the girls' singles U17 category at the Badminton Asia U17 & U15 Junior Championships held on Sunday. She staged a remarkable comeback to defeat her fellow Indian player, Shaina Manimuthu, with scores of 11-15, 15-10, and 15-12, as reported by the Badminton Association of India.
A Remarkable Season for Patri
This victory adds to an impressive 2026 season for the young athlete from Odisha. Earlier this year, Patri secured her first international title at the Pontianak International Challenge and also won the All India Junior U19 Badminton Ranking Tournament in Bengaluru. With this latest achievement, she has now added a continental U17 title to her previous U15 Asian championship from 2024.
Path to the Championship
As the second seed, Patri faced a challenging draw to reach the finals. After receiving a bye in the first round, she began her campaign with a hard-fought victory against China's Zhou Jing Li, winning 18-16, 12-15, and 15-13. She then defeated Japan's Shizuku Kashio with a score of 15-9, 15-12, before showcasing her skills in the quarterfinals with a commanding 15-8, 15-8 win over China's Lin Heng Men. In the semifinals, she displayed remarkable composure to edge past China's Yu Ying Gui with scores of 15-9, 11-15, and 15-11.
Manimuthu's Strong Performance
On the opposite side of the draw, sixth seed Shaina Manimuthu also had an impressive journey to the finals, setting up a rematch from their previous encounter in Bengaluru. Her path included a solid quarterfinal win against Japan's Yui Itabashi and a focused semifinal victory over another Japanese player, Anon Okimoto, with scores of 15-13, 15-12, showcasing her ability to maintain her composure in critical moments.
India's Success at the Championships
Patri's triumph ensures that the U17 girls' singles title remains with India for the second consecutive year, following Diksha Sudhakar's historic win in 2025. Manimuthu, who previously won the U15 Asian title, earned a well-deserved silver medal. Additionally, in the U15 category, the boys' doubles team of Aaditya Singh Negi and Tanmay Verma secured a bronze medal after their semifinal loss to the Chinese Taipei duo of Bo Lin Ho and Jui En Hou, concluding a successful campaign for the Indian contingent.
