Suzuki Jimny: A Rising Star in Off-Roading and International Markets

Suzuki Jimny's Export Journey

The Suzuki Jimny began its export journey five months post-launch in October, targeting markets in Latin America and the Middle East. It has garnered significant interest, particularly in Mexico, Australia, and South Africa. Since 2020, Suzuki has been producing the three-door variant of the Jimny specifically for export, with manufacturing taking place at their facility in Gurgaon, Haryana.

Success in Japan

Although the Jimny has struggled to gain traction in the Indian market, it has seen remarkable success in Japan, where it is known as the Nomade. It became the second SUV to be exported to Japan, following the Suzuki Fronx. Shortly after bookings opened, Suzuki was overwhelmed with 50,000 pre-orders, prompting them to temporarily suspend further bookings.

Commissioning for Border Patrol

A fleet of Suzuki Jimnys has been commissioned for use by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). These vehicles are set to operate in challenging conditions along the borders of Arunachal Pradesh and Leh Ladakh, assisting the ITBP in their various operational duties.

Performance in Extreme Conditions

The key question remains: can the Suzuki Jimny handle the harsh conditions of the border regions? In some remote areas, temperatures can plummet to -45 degrees Celsius. Designed for resilience, the Jimny is equipped to manage such extreme environments. Its low-range and high-ratio gearboxes enhance its capability to navigate tough terrains.

Engine Specifications and Off-Road Features

The Jimny boasts a robust 4x4 powertrain with an all-grip 4WD system, enabling it to traverse some of the most challenging landscapes. It offers various driving modes, including 2WD-high, 4WD-high, and 4WD-low. The vehicle's three-link rigid axle suspension ensures stability on uneven surfaces.

Powered by a 1.5-liter engine, the Jimny generates 105 BHP and a peak torque of 134 Nm. While these figures may appear modest, the lightweight design of the Jimny allows it to tackle diverse challenges effectively. The pricing for the Jimny ranges from Rs 12.76 lakh to Rs 14.97 lakh, making it a compelling option for off-road enthusiasts despite its seemingly delicate appearance.
