Suryakumar Yadav's Remarkable IPL 2025 Performance

Describing Suryakumar Yadav as the standout batter for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025 would be an understatement. During the Qualifier 2 match against Punjab Kings in Ahmedabad on Sunday, the Indian T20I captain delivered an impressive innings, scoring 44 runs off just 26 balls, which included four boundaries and three sixes. Yet, this explosive performance was not the only highlight of the day.

With this innings, Surya made history by becoming the first player from Mumbai Indians to surpass 700 runs in a single IPL season. So far, he has accumulated 717 runs across 16 matches, boasting five half-centuries, an average of 65, and a remarkable strike rate of 167. He currently ranks second in the Orange Cap standings, trailing GT's Sai Sudharsan, who has 759 runs.

The record for the most runs in a single IPL season still belongs to Virat Kohli, who scored 973 runs in 2016. Meanwhile, Surya has set a new milestone by achieving 25 or more runs in 16 consecutive matches during IPL 2025, breaking Shubman Gill's previous record of 13 matches set in 2023.

Unfortunately for MI, just when they needed him to continue his momentum, he was dismissed by PBKS spinner Yuzvendra Chahal for the fourth time in his career. In 13 encounters against Chahal, Surya has managed to score only 113 runs off 88 balls, with 35 dot balls, resulting in an average of 29 and a strike rate of 131 against the spinner. Interestingly, Chahal was returning from a wrist injury, having last played on May 18 against RR.
