Suryakumar Yadav Discusses Key Decisions Ahead of T20 World Cup Final

India's Captain Talks Tough Choices

On the eve of the 2026 T20 World Cup final against New Zealand, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav shared insights about the challenging decisions made by him and head coach Gautam Gambhir. He specifically mentioned the controversial decision to bench Axar Patel for the Super 8 match against South Africa. Axar, who was rested during the last league match against the Netherlands, was replaced by Washington Sundar. The team faced a significant 76-run loss in that match.

Suryakumar stated, "Tough calls are made by Gautam Gambhir and me. Axar was understandably upset about being dropped, but such decisions are part of the game. We felt we needed Sanju, and it turned out to be a positive choice." In the match against South Africa, Sundar bowled only two overs and managed to score just 11 runs while chasing a target of 188. However, Axar returned for the second Super 8 match against Zimbabwe and has been a regular player since then, contributing significantly in the semi-final against England.

Suryakumar Responds to Santner's Comments

In response to Mitchell Santner's remarks about silencing the crowd, Suryakumar Yadav urged for fresh perspectives, saying, "Koi naya line toh bolo, sab yahi line chipka rahe (say something new, everyone keeps repeating the same line). The atmosphere in our camp is excellent, and we are thrilled to play in this special stadium." Santner had previously stated that their aim was to quiet the audience, acknowledging the pressure on India to secure a victory at home.

The final match of the 2026 T20 World Cup is scheduled to take place at the Narendra Modi Stadium at 7:00 PM IST. Historically, India has not managed to defeat New Zealand in any T20 World Cup match.
