Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) has officially acquired South African fast bowler Gerald Coetzee for the remainder of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season. This decision comes after David Payne was sidelined due to an ankle injury, as confirmed in a recent announcement.
Gerald Coetzee's Cricketing Background
Gerald Coetzee boasts an impressive record, having participated in four Test matches, 14 One Day Internationals (ODIs), and 18 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) for South Africa, accumulating a total of 67 international wickets. In the IPL, he has played 14 matches, including four for the Gujarat Titans in the 2025 season and ten for the Mumbai Indians in 2024, where he secured 15 wickets.
David Payne's Brief Tenure with SRH
During his short stint with SRH in IPL 2026, David Payne played two matches. He made a notable debut against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, where he recorded figures of 2/35 in three overs, taking the wickets of RCB captain Rajat Patidar and wicketkeeper Jitesh Sharma. However, he did not take any wickets in his second match against the Kolkata Knight Riders.

According to an official release from the IPL, 'Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have signed Gerald Coetzee as a replacement for David Payne for the remainder of TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. Payne, who played two games for SRH this season, has been ruled out due to an ankle injury.'
The statement further reveals that Coetzee will join the SRH squad for a fee of Rs 2 crore. 'Coetzee, a right-arm pacer, has played four Tests, 14 ODIs, and 18 T20Is for South Africa, claiming 67 international wickets. He has previously participated in 14 IPL matches, representing both Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians, and has taken 15 wickets in the league.'
SRH's Performance in IPL 2026
As of now, SRH has played five matches in IPL 2026, achieving two victories and suffering three defeats. They currently sit in fifth place with a net run rate of +0.576.
