Sunit Chowrasia Clinches Third Consecutive Title at DP World PGTI NexGen
Chowrasia's Triumph in Varanasi
Sunit Chowrasia, a 31-year-old golfer from Kolkata, secured a remarkable victory at the inaugural INR 25 lakh DP World PGTI NexGen event held at the BLW Greens Golf Course. He finished the final round with a score of three-over 73, leading to a four-shot win.
Historic Achievement and Season Highlights
Chowrasia concluded the tournament with a total score of six-under 204 (67-64-73), marking his third consecutive win on the DP World PGTI NexGen circuit. This victory follows his earlier successes at the Alpha Sports Academy Golf Championship in Patna and the Vijay Kumar Memorial in Lucknow, making him the first player in NexGen history to achieve three straight wins. His latest win earned him INR 3,17,875 and solidified his position as the 2026 DP World PGTI NexGen Order of Merit Champion, with total earnings of INR 10,04,393. This accomplishment grants him an exemption for the 2027 season on the DP World PGTI Main Tour. Additionally, he matched Mani Ram's record of three wins in a single NexGen season, a feat accomplished in 2010.
Final Round Highlights
Mukeem Ali from Mathura (67-68-73) and Kolkata's Souvik Nayak (69-69-70) finished tied for second place at two-under 208. Chowrasia faced challenges during the final round, including a double bogey on the par-3 sixth hole and another shot lost on the par-5 ninth. Despite these setbacks, he maintained his composure, securing two birdies and two bogeys on the back nine to clinch the title.
Chowrasia Reflects on His Victory
After his win, Chowrasia expressed his joy, stating, "It feels great. Securing my card for next season on the main tour is a big achievement and gives me a lot of confidence going forward." He emphasized the importance of patience and trusting the process in his recent success. Chowrasia also reflected on his journey back from injury, noting the challenges he faced and the satisfaction of returning to competitive golf.
Looking Ahead
Chowrasia's immediate focus is on maximizing opportunities on the main tour and preparing for the Asian Tour Qualifying School later this year. He expressed gratitude towards his uncle, SSP Chawrasia, for his unwavering support during tough times.
Leaderboard Summary
Souvik Nayak and Mukeem Ali, the joint runners-up, improved their standings with scores of 70 and 73, respectively, but could not catch Chowrasia. Local favorite Hemant Yadav (69-64-77), who had matched the course record with a 64 in round two, fell to a tie for fourth place after a final round of 77, finishing at even-par 210 alongside Nikhil Sharma from Gurugram (68-74-68) and Pawan Kumar from Delhi (76-70-64).
