Sunil Gavaskar Mourns Loss of Lives in Bengaluru Stampede Following RCB's IPL Victory
Sunil Gavaskar Expresses Deep Regret
Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar shared his heartfelt sorrow regarding the tragic stampede that occurred outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, resulting in over 30 injuries and 11 fatalities. He recognized the deep emotional connection fans have developed over the years, as they eagerly awaited a trophy that has eluded the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).
Condolences and Support from RCB
Gavaskar commended RCB's performance in the IPL 2025 season, noting their remarkable achievements that garnered significant admiration. He extended his condolences to the families affected by the tragedy. In response to the incident, RCB announced a compensation of INR 10 lakh for each victim's family, demonstrating their commitment to support those impacted.
RCB's Long-Awaited Title Triumph
Reflecting on RCB's journey, Gavaskar remarked, 'Had RCB secured the trophy in the early years, the emotional response would not have been as intense after an 18-year wait. Other teams celebrated their victories with less fervor, perhaps because their fans did not endure such a prolonged wait. The slogan 'Ee saala cup naamde' became a burden for the team. This year, with that phrase less prominent, RCB showcased exceptional cricket, much of it away from their home crowd,' he noted in his column.
Fans' Prayers for RCB's Success
'RCB achieved a remarkable feat by winning every away game, setting a new IPL record. It’s no surprise that home fans wanted to honor them with a special ovation. My heartfelt condolences go out to those who lost loved ones. The prayers of fans can indeed alter fortunes, and it’s clear that the support from their loved ones played a role in bringing the coveted Cup to Bengaluru,' he added.
Heartbreaking Loss Due to Stampede
'What a tragedy! The loss of lives in the stampede outside Chinnaswamy Stadium is truly heartbreaking. All those individuals sought was a chance to see the players who have brought them immense joy over the years, particularly in the last couple of months. After 18 years of hope, the IPL Trophy was finally within reach,' he expressed.
Understanding Fans' Emotions
'It’s completely understandable that their joy knew no bounds, and they wished to express it to their heroes. Fans often desire to be close to their idols, perhaps even to capture a quick photo. Haven’t we all been fans at some point, wanting to share a brief moment with someone we admire?' Gavaskar concluded.
