On Monday, Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya extended his congratulations to Indian mixed martial arts (MMA) athlete Suchika Tariyal for achieving a groundbreaking milestone by winning India's inaugural MMA medal at the Asian Games 2026. Mandaviya took to social media platform X to share a video showcasing Suchika's remarkable accomplishment, stating, "A historic moment for Bharat! Suchika Tariyal scripts history by winning India’s first-ever MMA medal with a spectacular Bronze at the #AsianGames2026. The entire nation is proud of you!"

Suchika Tariyal Secures Bronze Medal

Suchika Tariyal made history by clinching the first-ever bronze medal for India in MMA during the Asian Games 2026 held in Aichi-Nagoya. Despite her compatriot Varun Sanyal's MMA journey being cut short due to medical issues, Suchika proudly represented Indian MMA, finishing as a bronze medalist after a 2-0 defeat against Singapore's Hui Hoon Teo.

On Sunday, Suchika guaranteed India's first medal at the Asian Games by reaching the semifinals of the women's traditional 60kg MMA event. She triumphed over Altanchimeg Baigalmaa, who came out aggressively in the second round, but Suchika's solid defense held strong. She executed a crucial reversal, taking her opponent down and maintaining control until the end of the round, securing her victory and confirming India's first medal of the Games.

India's Performance Across Other Sports

India's participation in the Asian Games 2026 has been eventful, with mixed results across various sports.

Soft Tennis

In soft tennis, Aadhya Tiwari and Jay Meena kicked off their mixed doubles Group B campaign with a commanding 5-0 victory against Cambodia's Viva Chao and Chanroseka Khun. They also triumphed over Mongolia's Bud Nyamdorj and Enkhkhuslen Ganbaatar, with a match against South Korea's Kim Yeon-hwa and Jaekyu Park scheduled next.

Shooting

The shooting team of Rudrankksh Patil, Parth Mane, and Himanshu Dhillon continued India's medal streak by securing a silver medal in the men's 10 m air rifle team event, scoring 1890.1, just shy of China's 1899.0. South Korea took home the bronze with a score of 1841.4. This marks India's third medal in shooting at the Asian Games 2026, all of which have been silver.

In individual events, Rudrankksh Patil placed third and Himanshu Dhillon seventh, qualifying for the men's 10m air rifle individual final, while Parth Mane finished 11th.

Swimming

In swimming, Srihari Nataraj advanced to the men's 50m backstroke final, with Rishabh Das as the reserve. Unfortunately, Mani Akash and Gitesh Shah did not qualify for the men's 50m freestyle final, and Dhanush Suresh missed out on the men's 100m breaststroke final.

Wushu

In wushu, Nyeman Wangsu finished 15th in the women's Changquan final.

Table Tennis

In table tennis, India achieved a 3-0 victory over Pakistan in the women's team Group F match.
