Successful Pickleball Tournament Raises Funds for Mercy House
Community Comes Together for Charity
A recent pickleball tournament held at Union-Endicott High School successfully generated over $12,000 for Mercy House of the Southern Tier, an organization dedicated to supporting individuals who are gravely ill and nearing the end of life. This inaugural event, dubbed the “Pay It Forward” Pickleball Tournament, featured competitions in men's, women's, and mixed categories, each divided into two skill levels: above and below 3.5.
To promote participation and donations, the registration fees were set at $50 for one tournament, with an option to enter a second tournament for an additional $20, as detailed by co-organizer Karen Campbell. In an interview, Campbell stated, "Registration was fifty dollars for one tournament and an additional twenty dollars for a second." The response to the event was overwhelming, particularly in the women's and mixed divisions, which surpassed capacity, while the men's division met expectations, according to co-organizer Shelly Farro.
In addition to the registration fees, the tournament also benefited from basket raffles and generous community donations, culminating in a total of over $12,000 raised. Farro emphasized that every dollar raised will be directed entirely to Mercy House, stating, "Every cent goes to Mercy House." The event saw significant involvement from volunteers, league players, and Mercy House staff, all of whom played crucial roles in organizing the fundraiser. Farro noted the strong community spirit, highlighting contributions from volunteers and league members, as well as baked goods provided by Mercy House staff.
For those who could not participate in the tournament, organizers encouraged direct donations to Mercy House of the Southern Tier to continue supporting this vital cause.
