Stuart Broad Criticizes Dukes Ball Quality Amid Controversy in India vs England Test

Concerns Raised Over Dukes Ball Quality
Former England fast bowler Stuart Broad has expressed strong criticism towards the makers of the Dukes ball following significant issues during the third Test match between India and England. The match, held on July 11, saw the ball being replaced twice in the first session, leading to frustration among players and raising serious doubts about its quality.
In the opening hour, Indian captain Shubman Gill noticed irregular behavior from the ball and requested an inspection from the umpires. Upon examination, it was determined that the ball needed to be replaced. This second new ball lasted only 10.4 overs before it was swapped out again.
When the new ball was introduced, both Gill and fast bowler Mohammed Siraj showed visible dissatisfaction. Gill was seen conversing with umpire Sharfuddoula, while Siraj openly mocked the ball's quality before play resumed. Remarkably, the newly introduced ball also had to be replaced later in the same session.
Broad's Outspoken Remarks on Social Media
Stuart Broad, who was providing commentary during the match, took to social media to voice his frustrations. He remarked that a cricket ball should function effectively without drawing attention, similar to a skilled wicketkeeper. He emphasized that the Dukes ball is increasingly problematic, being replaced almost every innings. Broad firmly stated that a quality ball should endure for at least 80 overs, not just 10.
"The cricket ball should be like a fine wicket keeper. Barely noticed. We are having to talk about the ball too much because it is such an issue & being changed virtually every innings. Unacceptable. Feels like it’s been 5 years now. Dukes have a problem. They need to fix it. A ball should last 80 overs. Not 10."
This isn't the first time the Indian team has faced challenges with the Dukes ball during this series. In the first Test, Rishabh Pant was penalized for expressing his discontent with the umpires regarding the ball. After the second Test at Edgbaston, Gill also publicly criticized its performance.
Despite the ongoing complaints, the manufacturers of the Dukes ball have defended their product, asserting confidence in its quality.
