Stuart Broad Advocates for Jofra Archer's Rest Ahead of Crucial Test Against India
Broad Suggests Rest for Archer Before Fifth Test
Manchester [UK], July 28: Former England fast bowler Stuart Broad has expressed that it may be prudent for England to give Jofra Archer a break before the fifth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against India, which is set to commence on Thursday at The Oval.
After a four-year hiatus due to injuries, Archer made his return to Test cricket during the Third Test at Lord's. Following an eight-day rest period, he was included in the squad for the fourth Test in Manchester. Since rejoining the team, Archer has bowled a total of 88.3 overs, showcasing his impressive speed and securing nine wickets at an average of 28.66.
The series score remains at 2-1 after the fourth Test concluded in a draw, highlighted by centuries from Shubman Gill (103), Washington Sundar (101*), and Ravindra Jadeja (107*). With India still in contention, England faces a tough decision regarding Archer's participation and workload management.
Broad believes that with three days of rest before the next Test, it would be wise to bring in Gus Atkinson and allow Archer some time off. He also suggested that Josh Tongue should replace Brydon Carse, who appeared fatigued during the match at Old Trafford.
“I think Gus Atkinson has to play. Although he hasn’t had much game time, we need to assess his capabilities. He hasn’t faced top-tier opposition in Test cricket yet. [Brydon] Carse has given his all but seems to be running on empty, so Atkinson should take his place,” Broad stated, as reported by a Media Channel.
“[Josh] Tongue started the series and while he primarily dismissed lower-order batsmen, he could serve as a natural replacement for Archer. We can’t afford to have Archer return after four years only to overwork him again,” he added.
Concerns regarding Archer's fitness arise from his history of injuries that sidelined him from Test cricket for four years. While the fifth Test is crucial, England must also consider the upcoming Ashes series in Australia, which begins in four months.
“I don’t think Archer should play three consecutive matches after such a long absence. With Gus Atkinson returning and Stokes dealing with a minor injury, it’s risky to have three of your four seamers in such a situation. If fit, I would definitely select Atkinson for his home ground,” former England captain Nasser Hussain commented.
England's squad for the fifth Test includes: Ben Stokes (Captain), Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Zak Crawley, Liam Dawson, Ben Duckett, Jamie Overton, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jamie Smith, Josh Tongue, and Chris Woakes.
