Steve Smith's Concussion Incident

During the fourth day of the first Test match against South Africa in Durban, Australian cricketer Steve Smith underwent a concussion assessment after being hit on the helmet by a bouncer from Anrich Nortje. This incident took place on the fifth delivery of the 13th over of Australia's second innings on Monday, where Nortje's delivery struck Smith's helmet and deflected towards fine leg. The team's medical staff evaluated Smith on the field, and his helmet was replaced before he continued batting. He managed to score 27 runs off 41 balls before being dismissed by Simon Harmer.

Smith did not participate in the fielding when South Africa commenced their second innings, with Michael Neser stepping in as a substitute fielder. On the previous day, Smith had showcased his fielding skills, taking impressive catches at slip off Nathan Lyon's bowling. Cricket Australia announced that further updates regarding Smith's condition would be provided later.

Concussion Background and Substitute Situation

It appears that Australia will not require a concussion substitute for the remainder of the first Test, as Smith has completed his batting responsibilities and seldom bowls in recent times. Throughout his career, Smith has experienced several concussions, with a significant incident occurring at Lord's in 2019 when he was struck by a bouncer from England's Jofra Archer.

Injury Challenges for Australia

The Australian team has faced numerous injury challenges during their current tour of South Africa. Cameron Green, who suffered an abdominal strain, and Josh Inglis, who fractured a finger, were both ruled out of the first Test, leading to the inclusion of Nic Maddinson and Sam Harper. Maddinson's selection marked his return to Test cricket after a decade, as he opened the innings in Durban. Inglis, who sustained his finger injury during the first ODI against South Africa last month, rejoined the Australian squad in Durban and participated in a batting session on Monday as part of his recovery.
