Los Angeles, June 29: Stephen Eustaquio, the goal-scoring star for Canada, shared his thoughts on his dramatic last-minute goal against South Africa, which marked the team's first-ever knockout stage victory. He expressed his joy in contributing to this historic achievement but emphasized that their journey is far from over.
Throughout the match, South Africa adopted a defensive strategy while Canada struggled to penetrate their defense. Just when it seemed the game would extend into extra time, Canada capitalized on their opportunities, with Eustaquio delivering a powerful stoppage-time goal.
This goal was particularly significant for Eustaquio, being his first for Canada since late 2023 and his fourth goal on American soil, following three goals in the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup. He described it as possibly the most crucial goal of his career.
Reflecting on the team's mindset, he stated, "The belief started when we advanced from the group stage. In knockout matches, confidence plays a vital role." Both teams had never reached this stage before, and Canada is now set to continue their World Cup adventure against the winners of the Netherlands vs. Morocco match at Houston Stadium.
"Now we face either Morocco or the Netherlands, and on a good day, we can achieve great things. We have a unique bond in this team, like brothers. When we support each other, extraordinary things can happen. I’m thrilled, but our mission isn’t complete," he remarked.
Discussing his goal, Eustaquio mentioned that he didn’t check the clock but sensed the match was nearing its conclusion when he scored the pivotal goal.
"It's a challenging venue, and I couldn't see the game clock. I tried to gauge the time during hydration breaks, but when I scored, I knew it was almost over," he explained. "We put in a lot of effort to secure this win. We wanted to dedicate this victory to all Canadians. We maintained our belief and kept pushing forward, and I couldn't have envisioned it any other way. When I took the shot, it felt like everyone was with me, contributing their energy, and it found the back of the net," he concluded.
