Victory at the Indian Open
Stavya Bhasin and Vishal Jadhav emerged victorious in the Split Age 35+ Men’s Doubles event at the Indian Open, a PWR 1000 tournament recognized by the Indian Pickleball Association (IPA) and hosted by Global Sports at CrossCourts in Hyderabad on April 5. They secured the gold medal by defeating Divyanshu Kataria and Rohan Gajjar with scores of 11-5 and 11-8 in the final match. The pair showcased a steady performance throughout the tournament, overcoming early challenges and maintaining dominance during crucial moments.
In the first game, Divyanshu and Rohan initially took the lead, but Stavya and Vishal quickly responded by breaking their serve and leveling the score. They then gained momentum with consistent play at the kitchen line, leading to a 6-3 advantage that prompted a timeout from their opponents. Vishal played a pivotal role during this stretch, effectively setting up points, which allowed them to clinch the first game at 11-5.
The second game proved to be more intense, with both teams trading points to reach a 6-6 tie. However, Stavya and Vishal managed to pull ahead again, utilizing superior placement and control. A significant rally featured Vishal executing a lofted return that pushed Divyanshu back, resulting in a vital point. Despite a late surge from Divyanshu and Rohan, who narrowed the score to 8-9, Stavya and Vishal maintained their composure to finish the match 11-8.
Earlier in the day, Divyanshu and Rohan had triumphed over Aman Patel and Ravi Ranjan with a score of 15-2 in the semi-finals, while Stavya and Vishal defeated Purvansh Patel and Dhiren Patel to secure their place in the final. Both teams entered the championship match with unbeaten records from the group stage.
After their victory, Vishal expressed gratitude towards his partner, stating, “Thank you to Stavya Bhasin. Because of him, my gold, which was left in the tournament, is now complete.” The Indian Open attracted over 1,100 participants across 54 categories, showcasing talent from more than 19 countries, further emphasizing the growing popularity of pickleball in India.
