Staggering Prize Money Disparity: FIFA World Cup vs. T20 World Cup
A Closer Look at World Cup Prize Money
London: The Football World Cup and the Cricket World Cup are both monumental events in the sports calendar. However, when it comes to their prize money, the contrast is astonishing. Fans may be surprised to learn the financial rewards awaiting the winners of the 2026 FIFA World Cup compared to those of the ICC T20 World Cup.
The upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup is poised to be the largest sports event ever, featuring 48 teams competing in 104 matches over a span of 39 days across three host nations and 16 stadiums. This marks the first increase in team numbers since 1998. Alongside the expansion of the tournament, FIFA is also breaking records with its prize money, increasing the total pool by 50% compared to the previous World Cup. The grand total now stands at an impressive $655 million, equivalent to approximately ₹5,469 crore.
FIFA's Generous Financial Package
The FIFA Council has unveiled a comprehensive financial package of $727 million for the teams participating in the 2026 World Cup. Out of this, $655 million will be allocated as prize money among the 48 competing teams. The champion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup will receive a staggering $50 million, which translates to around ₹417.5 crore.
The runner-up will earn $33 million, approximately ₹275.5 crore. Additionally, every qualifying team will receive $1.5 million from FIFA to aid in their preparations. This means that even teams eliminated in the first round (ranked 33rd to 48th) are guaranteed a minimum of $10.5 million, roughly ₹87 crore.
Comparing Cricket's T20 World Cup Rewards
In stark contrast, the T20 World Cup, one of cricket's premier tournaments, offers a total prize pool of only $11.25 million, or about ₹94 crore. To put this into perspective, the amount awarded to a single losing team in the first round of the Football World Cup ($10.5 million) is nearly equal to the entire prize fund of the T20 World Cup!
For example, the Indian team, which recently clinched the T20 World Cup title, received just $2.63 million, around ₹22 crore. The runner-up, New Zealand, was awarded $1.42 million, approximately ₹11.8 crore. These figures from FIFA highlight the vast difference in global appeal, financial backing, and reach between football and cricket.
