Spain Triumphs Over France: A Path to the World Cup Final Awaits
Spain's Dominance Shines in Semifinal Victory
Arlington: Spain showcased its defensive strength and flair, overpowering a French attack led by Kylian Mbappe, securing a spot in yet another World Cup final.
The Spanish squad achieved their sixth clean sheet in seven matches, triumphing 2-0 in the semifinals against one of the tournament's most formidable scoring teams.
Teen sensation Lamine Yamal was spot on when he warned France to be wary of Spain. Despite FIFA's top-ranked team being spearheaded by Mbappe, who had netted 20 goals in his 20 World Cup appearances prior to the semifinals, along with Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembele and Michael Olise, who boasts a tournament-high five assists, they faced a formidable opponent.
Spain's coach, Luis de la Fuente, praised his players, stating they were up against the best team in the world.
Mikel Oyarzabal converted a penalty after Yamal's clever play drew a foul, and Pedro Porro added a second goal, propelling Spain into its second World Cup final.
Just a day after turning 19, Yamal had a goal disallowed for offside shortly after Porro's assist to Dani Olmo had put Spain ahead 2-0. However, it was Yamal's intelligent play against an experienced defender that set the tone for Spain's early advantage.
Spain is set to clash with either defending champions Argentina or England on Sunday in East Rutherford, New Jersey, just across the river from New York City.
Rodri, a midfielder for Spain, expressed the team's desire for more, stating, "We want to win this World Cup."
France, aiming to become the third team to reach three consecutive World Cup finals, will instead compete in the third-place match in Miami Gardens, Florida, on Saturday.
Former France coach Didier Deschamps acknowledged Spain's defensive capabilities, noting their ability to close down spaces while also highlighting his team's technical errors that hindered their performance.
Argentina and England are set to face off on Wednesday in the second semifinal match featuring powerhouse teams.
This victory marks the third consecutive summer in which Spain has defeated France in a tournament semifinal, following a 2-1 win in the 2024 European Championship semifinals and a 5-4 victory in the Nations League last year.
Yamal had previously indicated that France should be concerned after Spain's quarterfinal win over Belgium paved the way for this semifinal encounter.
Mbappe remarked on Spain's control of the game, stating, "It’s difficult when you don’t change the play of Spain," as he failed to hit the target with any of his three attempts.
Spain has outscored its opponents 12-1 since a goalless draw against the surprising Cape Verde in the group stage. The only goal conceded by goalkeeper Unai Simon came during the quarterfinal against Belgium, ending his World Cup record of 650 minutes without conceding.
This World Cup journey has extended Spain's unbeaten streak in regular time to 37 matches (28 wins and nine draws) since March 2024, surpassing their previous record of 35 consecutive matches from 2007-09.
The defeat ended France's impressive streak of six consecutive World Cup victories, a feat they also achieved in the 2018 and 2022 tournaments.
Oyarzabal's penalty in the 22nd minute was awarded after Yamal was fouled by defender Lucas Digne.
Digne, attempting to clear the ball after a poor first touch, inadvertently kicked Yamal, who had challenged him from behind in the penalty area.
Oyarzabal's fifth goal of this World Cup marked the first time either team had trailed in their seven matches in the tournament, bringing his total to 30 goals in 60 international appearances for Spain.
For the second goal, Porro broke free and received a pass from Olmo, who managed to touch the ball just before being fouled by defender Dayot Upamecano.
"We knew we were a very tough team, and we’re doing things really well," Porro stated.
France had only conceded two goals in their first six matches of this tournament.
Spain had two additional significant scoring opportunities in the first half.
A free kick was awarded just outside the box after Adrien Rabiot received a yellow card for a foul on Olmo in the eighth minute, but Alex Baena's attempt hit the wall of French defenders.
In the 38th minute, after a failed clearance by France goalkeeper Mike Maignan, Baena seized the opportunity, leading to several quick passes before Fabian Ruiz's close-range shot was expertly saved by Upamecano.
Mbappe, tied with Argentina's Lionel Messi for the tournament's highest scorer with eight goals, leads the race for the Golden Boot based on assists. He still has the third-place match to potentially increase his tally, while Messi has two matches left in his sixth World Cup to vie for the Golden Boot and extend his record of 21 goals in the tournament.
"As the captain, I must take full responsibility, and I have no issues with that," Mbappe concluded.
