South Africa's Coach Reflects on T20 World Cup Semifinal Loss to New Zealand
South Africa's Disappointing Exit from T20 World Cup
After South Africa's defeat against New Zealand in the T20 World Cup semifinal, coach Shukri Conrad described the loss as a "bloody walloping." Meanwhile, Finn Allen, who scored a remarkable century, expressed confidence in facing either India or England in the final on Sunday.
Allen's record-setting century, achieved in just 33 balls, marked the fastest century in both T20 and 50-over World Cups, leading to South Africa's significant nine-wicket defeat at Eden Gardens. Despite a valiant effort from Tristan Stubbs (29) and Marco Jansen (55*), who helped the team recover from 77/5 to 169/8, South Africa faced their first T20 World Cup loss to New Zealand after five previous victories. This defeat also marked their fourth consecutive loss to the Kiwis in ICC knockout matches.
'It was a bloody walloping': Coach Shukri Conrad
In the post-match press conference, Conrad stated that his team never really got into the game, emphasizing that it was not a case of choking but rather a comprehensive defeat. He remarked, "I do not know if tonight was a choke. I thought it was a bloody walloping. To choke, you need to have a sniff in the game, and we did not have that. We received a proper 'snot klaaped', a South African term for a severe hiding. There will be plenty of criticism coming our way," he added.
Despite the loss, Conrad expressed pride in his team's achievements, noting that few expected them to reach the semifinals given their prior form. He acknowledged that New Zealand played exceptionally well, particularly in utilizing the conditions in Kolkata. "They exploited the conditions effectively with their spinners, and we struggled to get started. Full credit to them; they were significantly better than us tonight," he stated.
Conrad also discussed the challenges of T20 cricket, where early wickets can lead to a downward spiral. He mentioned that Stubbs' dismissal came at a crucial moment when the team was gaining momentum, and criticized their management of the final over, where they failed to capitalize on scoring opportunities.
He concluded by praising New Zealand's bowling, particularly their spinners, who made it difficult for South Africa to score. "New Zealand was outstanding tonight. We needed to take risks, but their bowlers gave us nothing and squeezed us effectively," he said.
'We can beat anybody': Finn Allen
On the other side, Finn Allen, who made history with his performance, credited the bowlers for their strong start and highlighted the significance of their recent T20I series against India. "Our bowlers set the tone for the match. The series against India was crucial for us, and it shows that we rise to the occasion in important fixtures. We are prepared to fight until the end, and our bowlers did just that today," he remarked.
On Partnership with Tim Seifert
Allen expressed hope that his parents were proud of his performance and noted that his opening partner, Tim Seifert, made batting easier for him. "I aimed to support Tim. If the ball was in my area, I would go for boundaries; otherwise, I would get singles to keep him on strike. Tim has been in incredible form throughout the tournament, making it enjoyable to bat alongside him," he shared.
Looking Ahead to the T20 World Cup Final
When asked about their potential opponents in the final, Allen confidently stated, "We can beat anybody. We have a lot of momentum going into the weekend. If we play our best cricket, we can win against anyone. We will be watching the match tomorrow night, and we hope to put on a great show on Sunday," he concluded.
