South Africa's World Cup Hopes Remain Alive

Atlanta, US - On June 19, South Africa kept their aspirations for advancing to the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup 2026 alive by securing a 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic in Atlanta.

The Czech Republic initially took the lead with a goal from Michal Sadilek, who scored the quickest goal of this World Cup just five minutes and eight seconds into the match. This goal surpassed Felix Nmecha's effort for Germany, which came eight seconds later against Curacao.

However, Teboho Mokoena's late penalty ensured that both teams shared the points, maintaining their chances of progressing to the last 32.

Following this match, both teams now have one point each, trailing co-hosts Mexico and South Korea by two points. These two teams are scheduled to meet later in the day. To advance, South Africa and the Czech Republic will likely need to secure victories in their final Group A matches.

South Africa's next challenge is against South Korea, while the Czech Republic will face a formidable opponent in Mexico at the Estadio Azteca.

Both teams entered this match looking to bounce back from earlier defeats. The Czech Republic started strong, with Patrik Schick missing a prime opportunity in the first minute, heading the ball wide despite being their key attacking player.

After the match, South Africa's head coach, Hugo Broos, expressed his pride in the team's performance following the draw.

Broos commended his players for their attacking spirit and aggressive style, while also recognizing the minor mistakes that prevented a victory.

“I’m very proud of my team. This is Bafana Bafana – we love good football, we are aggressive, we create chances. Yes, we made mistakes, but I’m very proud of the performance today,” Broos stated.

He also acknowledged the physical challenge posed by the Czech team, noting that his players held their own against a tall and strong opponent.

“Czechia are powerful and very tall. We did very well. It’s a little bit of a pity that it’s only 1-1, but we just have to win the game against Korea Republic, which will be very difficult too. If we play with the same mentality, it will be possible,” he added.
