Proteas Secure Series with Record-Breaking Performance

In a thrilling match held in Gqeberha, South Africa triumphed over Ireland by 74 runs, successfully clinching their three-match ODI series. The Proteas achieved a remarkable score of 375/6, marking their highest total in women's 50-over cricket and the 13th highest in history.

Despite Ireland's efforts, which included surpassing the 300-run mark for the fifth time, they could not match South Africa's impressive total.

Wolvaardt and Luus Shine in Record Total

Laura Wolvaardt, the captain of South Africa, led the charge with a stellar 124 runs, supported by Sune Luus, who scored 114, and Dane van Niekerk, who contributed 88 runs. This match marked van Niekerk's return to ODI cricket after a four-year hiatus, and she praised the team's batting performance as they took a 2-0 lead in the series.

"It's always rewarding to secure a series win with a game remaining. Our batting was exceptional, and we often discuss reaching the 400-run mark," van Niekerk stated, highlighting the team's achievements.

Bowling Needs Improvement Ahead of Final Match

Leah Jones stood out among the bowlers for South Africa, taking three wickets. However, van Niekerk acknowledged the need for improvement in their bowling performance before the final match in Johannesburg on Friday.

"We need to refine our bowling. Although we are missing some senior bowlers, it was disappointing. We struggled with our field placements, which made it challenging. Ireland's achievement of 300 runs is commendable, showcasing good cricket overall," she added.

Ireland's Record Chase Yields Positives

Orla Prendergast came close to a century, scoring 97 runs, while Amy Hunter added 64 runs to Ireland's total, which was their highest score against South Africa. Despite falling short, captain Gaby Lewis expressed optimism about the team's progress.

"Looking at the entire tour, we are definitely heading in the right direction, which is encouraging," Lewis remarked. "The girls showed great resilience, and Orla played exceptionally well. We aim to finish the series on a high note."
