The 18-member squad for this series has already been announced, but Shreyas Iyer's name was notably absent. This decision has raised eyebrows, particularly from former captain Sourav Ganguly.

Ganguly has expressed his concerns regarding Iyer's exclusion, highlighting the player's impressive form over the past year. He noted that Iyer has worked on his weaknesses against short balls and praised his ability to score runs under pressure.

Ganguly's Insights on Iyer's Performance

In an interview with a sports outlet, Ganguly remarked that Iyer's performance in the last year has been exceptional. He emphasized that Iyer is a player who has been left out of the team despite his capability to perform under pressure and handle short deliveries effectively. Ganguly expressed a desire to see Iyer included in the squad for this series to evaluate his potential.

As of now, Iyer has participated in 14 Test matches, accumulating 811 runs at an average of 36.86 and a strike rate of 63.01 across 24 innings. His record includes 50 half-centuries and one century. Iyer last played a Test match in 2024, during which he was dropped from the team mid-series against England. In the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy, he scored 480 runs at an impressive average of 68.57 in seven innings for Mumbai.
