Sift Kaur Samra Shines at ISSF World Cup
Indian shooter Sift Kaur Samra showcased her skills by clinching the bronze medal in the women's 50m rifle 3 positions event during the ISSF World Cup held on Thursday.
The 23-year-old athlete, who currently holds the world record in this event, achieved a score of 453.1 in the final round featuring eight competitors. She set the record while winning gold at the 2022 Asian Games.
Gold was claimed by Norway's Jeanette Hegg Duestad with a score of 466.9, while Switzerland's Emely Jaeggi secured the silver medal with 464.8.
In the men's 10m air rifle event, Ankush Jadhav narrowly missed the finals, finishing 11th in the qualifications with a total score of 631.7 over six series.
Umamahesh Maddineni placed seventh with 632.3 but was ineligible for the final as he was competing for ranking points only. Arjun Babuta and Sandeep Singh finished 43rd and 53rd, respectively, with scores of 629.1 and 628.3.
Earlier, Emely Jaeggi qualified for the finals in the women's 50m rifle 3 positions event despite finishing ninth in the qualifications with a score of 590, as two competitors in the top eight were only shooting for ranking points.
Samra, hailing from Faridkot, Punjab, ranked second in qualifications with a score of 592 across the kneeling, prone, and standing stages.
She had previously won a gold medal at the World Cup in Buenos Aires earlier this year, marking a strong start to the season following a less-than-stellar performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
France's Agathe Cecile Camille Girard also scored 592 but topped the qualifications due to more inner 10s (Xs), while Switzerland's Audrey Gogniat was third heading into the finals.
Other Indian competitors included Ashi Chouksey in 11th place with 589, Anjum Moudgil in 27th with 586, Shriyanka Sadangi in 53rd with 582, and Nischal in 60th position.
