Gill's Remarkable Display at Edgbaston
Birmingham [UK], July 7: Veteran Indian cricketer Ajinkya Rahane has praised captain Shubman Gill for his outstanding performance during the second Test match against England at Edgbaston. Gill showcased his batting prowess with two centuries, scoring 269 in the first innings and an aggressive 161 in the second, leading India to a commanding 336-run victory and leveling the series at 1-1.
In a video shared on his official X account, Rahane commended Gill's composure under pressure, particularly after India's loss in the first Test.
“What impressed me about Shubman was his attitude, determination, and focus throughout both innings,” Rahane remarked.
“It’s challenging to bounce back after losing the first Test, especially with the series and match on the line,” he added.
India made a remarkable comeback, achieving a historic win at Edgbaston for the first time. Gill's double century in the first innings set a solid foundation, while his aggressive century in the second innings sealed the victory.
“Scoring a double hundred and setting the tone for your team is incredible. His 269 in the first innings allowed us to post a significant total, and the batting in the second innings was just the icing on the cake,” Rahane noted.

Gill's leadership and batting dominance enabled India to set a daunting target of 608 runs, which proved insurmountable for England.
In the match, England chose to field first. After losing KL Rahul (2) early, an 80-run partnership between Yashasvi Jaiswal (87 off 107 balls, including 13 fours) and Karun Nair (31 off 50 balls, with five fours) helped India stabilize. Captain Shubman Gill formed crucial partnerships, scoring 269 runs off 387 balls, including 30 fours and three sixes, contributing to India's total of 587.
Shoaib Bashir (3/167) was England's standout bowler, while Chris Woakes and Josh Tongue each took two wickets.
In England's first innings, they found themselves in trouble at 84/5. However, a remarkable 303-run partnership between Harry Brook (158 off 234 balls, with 17 fours and a six) and Jamie Smith (184* off 207 balls, with 21 fours and four sixes) turned the tide. Siraj (6/70) and Akash Deep (4/88) managed to take the last five wickets for just 20 runs, restricting England to 407 runs and gaining a 180-run lead.
India responded with a quick half-century partnership between Jaiswal (28 off 22 balls, with six fours) and KL Rahul, who scored 55 off 84 balls with ten boundaries. A 110-run partnership between Rishabh Pant (65 off 58 balls, with eight fours and three sixes) and Gill, along with a 175-run stand with Jadeja, who scored an unbeaten 69*, led India to declare at 427/6, setting England a massive target of 608 runs.
During England's chase, they struggled at 50/3. Jamie Smith (88 off 99 balls, with nine fours and four sixes) was the only bright spot as they were bowled out for 271 runs, losing by 336 runs, thanks to an impressive performance from Akash Deep (6/99), who took ten wickets in the match.
